A WORD IN THE WIND, from 2002, is an album that both exemplifies the band's beloved core sound and explores new territory. The duo's blissful reveries on this album have a pronounced earthy quality to them, clearly inspired by the beauty of the natural world. The ambience is one of sun-drenched mesas and ancient landmarks, hieroglyphs on cave walls and vast arid landscapes. Flutes play a larger role in the 2002 sound this time around, alongside harmonic chant tones, tribal rhythms and piano. Dreamy synth ambience still comes into the picture, but the melodies have Native American and Asian undertones. Besides the music CD, 2002 also provides a DVD of imagery designed to accompany the songs, which includes colorful imagery juxtaposed with multicultural elements and natural landscapes.
