David, a shy young African American boy, makes friends in school by letting his classmates help him with his drawing of a bare winter tree. He proudly writes "Our Class Picture" on the finished work, including himself in the group.

When David gets home from school, he begins a picture of the tree again, finding satisfaction in doing something on his own as well as creating a reminder of the activity that helped him make friends at school.
