The first village on the great road between Stutt- gard and Munich is Esslinghem, on the banks of the Neckar. The hill-sides in its vicinity are covered with vineyards, while in the plain patches of maize here and there appear. In this part of the country the rural population work from morning to night in the fields, exposed to every variety of weather. Men and women look much more unhealthy than the generality of those English factory operatives over whose lot so many philanthropists have lamented in undue degree.
