Star of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who Played with Fire and As it is in Heaven,
Michael Nyqvist is one of Sweden's best loved actors. In this memoir, Nyqvist details his life
from the time of his adoption as a baby to tracking down his biological parents at age 30,
discovering to his surprise that his mother was Swedish and his father Italian.
Michael went from not being allowed to talk about being adopted when growing up, to
wanting to find his biological parents when he had his own children. In between, he played
ice hockey in winter, football in summer, and at 17 was an exchange student in Omaha,
Nebraska, in the USA. Next came a fleeting attempt to study ballet, but he soon found out it
was not his calling and dropped out. At age 19 he was accepted to the Swedish Academic
School of Drama, and after working in theatre for many years, became a huge success in
Swedish cinema in 2000.
Michael has played various roles: a grieving husband and father, an ambassador, a musician
in As it is in Heaven and journalist Mikhael Blomkvist in the Millennium Trilogy. He is the
recipient of distinguished awards including Best Male Actor at the Guldbagge, the Swedish
Oscars, in 2002; Filmstar of the Year 2002 and 2004 by Aftonbladet, a Swedish newspaper;
Best Actor at the International Film Festival in Gijon 2003; As it is in Heaven was nominated
as Best Foreign Film at the Oscar Awards in 2004; and he won Best Male Actor at the
International Film Festival in Minsk 2006.
