Under common law principles and more particularly, occupational health and safety legislation, employers have what is called 'a duty of care' for their employees requiring them (employers and managers) to provide a safe and healthy workplace. Stress is increasingly regarded as any other illness or injury and is equally becoming an increasingly worrisome source of management concern, not least because of the potential for complaint by an employee on the grounds of it causing disability or in experiencing consequent disability discrimination.
Kevin Hume draws upon workplace communications and teaching skills at the highest levels. His recent experience as a senior adviser to the Minister of Labor in New Zealand responsible for the successful implementation of a major industrial relations legislative reform program in occupational health and safety and employment relations refined and developed his existing interest in workplace issues. As a broadcaster and journalist he has closely followed workplace issues and the changing nature of employment patterns and practice for thirty years.
MEDITATION is simply a technique for relaxing the body and calming the mind which anyone can learn and enjoy. Meditation makes you feel good. And it's fun to do. More than anything else this feel-good factor explains its increasing popularity.
Together with production partner Jörg Hofmann of Aeroglider, he has voiced and fashioned a compelling mix of easy-to-follow guided meditations mixed with subtle and beautiful music and natural effects which you can sample below.
Meditation does not need to be a trance-like state in which you become oblivious to the world around you. Nor does it involve blanking out the mind. Instead meditation is, in essence, about learning to focus in the present so the mind becomes clear and the body relaxes. So long as you consciously focus on one thing and let all else fade into the background, almost any simple activity can serve your meditative practice.
Learning to be in the present and focusing on just one thing is proving to have remarkable effects. And this is what is attracting so much contemporary scientific and medical attention. For recent research shows, meditation tones body and mind and unites both in delightful harmony. A harmonious body and mind means better health and a more balanced appreciation of all life's many ups and downs.
Our lives are becoming ever more crowded and stressful. As work pressures increase, our health, relationships and emotional lives become impoverished. Work-related stress is a major hazard throughout the industrialized world fuelling poor work performance, occupation-related illness and consequent litigation. Such stresses are now becoming the concern of employers and managers sensitive to the need to reduce their vulnerability to hazards. Here too meditation is a proven means of reducing workplace stress and providing a healthier workplace culture.
We live in what is called 'The Age of Anxiety'. In this anxious world we all need techniques which can diminish our fears and improve our resilience in dealing with all life's unending challenges. Meditation is a helpful way of managing change and difficulties in one's life, putting the bounce back into your step and enjoyment back into your relationships, be it with your environment, family or friends.
