I thought it was full of humour and oddity, -- I had even corrected several words by a pocket edition of Johnson's Dictionary that I have by me, and interlined others; in a w, ord, I fancied 'it was perfect. I handed it to him -- I watched his countenance to see when the risible muscles would contract from a smile into a broad grin, as he got into the pith of the story: will you believe it, reader ? (you wont when you read it) not a smile came over his placid -- no, his leaden face not a curl even played upon his lip He read it as if it were a homily, or an association speech, and thus he spoke: Friend. Charley, my dear fellow, this will never do -- 'tis really sad stuff. You know I would'nt wish to say any thing that would hurt your feelings -- but your story is absolutely devoid of incident, point, description,, -- in short 'tis the dull ordinary sort of occurrence, that happens every day in the life of an ordinary man; and in fact it wont sell. Charley. (Greatly annoyed) Allow me to tell you, sir, that I think you're no judge; and even supposing it wants some of those qualities you speak of, 'twill sell nevertheless, for it is written only for my friends -- they don't expect much from me; and the most of them are so tired, I dare say, with books of merit, that they'll be delighted to get one that they can laugh at for the very want of it.
