Most of Tony Scott's recording career took place during the decades of the 50's and 60's, when he was somewhat well known as a jazz soloist. When MUSIC FOR ZEN MEDITATION was originally released back in 1964, the album was a major departure for the artist. Rather than being a jazz album, Scott collaborated with koto player Shinichi Yuize and shakuhachi flutist Hozan Yamamoto to present and album of meditative, Asian themed improvisations. Keeping in line with the tenets of zen mysticism, the music is very spacious and vast; it's the sort of music that works well for providing atmosphere. One other unique aspect of this recording is the fact that the clarinet is usually not found in this sort of setting.
