We were all excitement at the move which was now taking place; and the idea of our final destination being revealed to us, inspired us with fresh vigour. It was evident that something was very speedily about to be done, as the transports and steamers were all on the move, and were under orders for Varna. Sebastopol was said by many to be our destination; Kaffa was also spoken of; and some even said that Anapa was to be attacked; while the opinion of others was, that no place at all was to be taken, but that the troops were to be all sent down to winter-quarters at Scutari. The men had been practised in the embarkation and disembarkation of guns, etc., on the south side CHOLERA ON BOARD SHIP. 19 of Varna Bay, at which Lord Raglan, Sir Edmund Lyons, and Sir George Brown, were present, and their operations were most successful. The accounts of the cholera at this time were truly heart-rending. The army suffered dreadfully; but those who have only witnessed the effects of this fatal pestilence on land, can scarcely imagine the horrors of it on board ship.
