Health care in India has shown remarkable improvement since the country 's independence in 1947. Doubling of longevity from 32 to 64 years, a steep fall in infant mortality and maternal mortality rates, eradication of small pox are few of the notable achievements. Complex procedures like Cardiac Surgery, Bone Marrow Transplants and Liver Transplants are now routinely carried out in the country. However, the health care indices still significantly lag behind those of the developed countries.
