You will gather, at once, from the announcement of these words, and also from the advertising notice which many of you may have read, that my object in the present Discourse, differs, in a large degree, from that of hundreds and thousands of my Protestant brethren, in their voices from the Pulpit, on the Topic of the Day.? There is no room for denying, that our Country is already indebted very largely, to the arrogance of her enemies, along with the constructive treason of many of her children, for waking up amongst us a perfect phrenzy of indignation, against the common foe of England's freedom, and of England's faith. And believing as I do, that neither our glorious Reformation, nor the progress of the Times, has wrought one jot of improvement in the creed or the character of Popery, it is to myself a source of unspeakable consolation, and a ground of thanksgiving to God, that both the pulpit and the press are now thundering around us, their fidelity to their God, and their allegiance to their Queen. I trust I need hardly remind any one of you, that every true Papist bears a double character?that of a civil invader, and that of an enemy to our chosen faith. He may compass the death of his Sovereign, if his church demands it?and, in the name of his church, he spreads, go where he will, the doctrines he maintains. It follows, from this, that the character of a true Protestant must ever be a double one.
