Providing long-term follow-up data on some 502 consecutively admitted patients hospitalized at a state psychiatric institute over a 14-year period, this study explores the fate of persons in an intermediate range of emotional handicap--specifically borderline schizophrenic, manic-depressive, and schizophreniform patients. Multivariate analysis of the follow-up data is conducted, important correlations between the various factors examined and the outcomes for the 502 patients are established, and illuminating case vignettes are presented.
