The Last Journey To Mumbai chronicles a series of travel experiences, incidents, anecdotes and relationships-collaging to find a voice through the protagonist-Ruby Bakshi. It would be apt to say that the novel is a personal journey ---into herself. Rooted in urban India, the novel tracks the ups and downs, the trials and tribulations of two families---D'Souzas and Bakshis, one Christian and the other Hindu and the metroman Vinoo, over a span of nearly forty years. The stories of the two families run parallel to each other. They do not exist in isolation.. Their themes are consonant and ideas assimilative. Dark and light shades of childhood have been sensitively captured. The novel reveals some of the people caught in states of emotional flux, having departed in varying degrees from what is conventionally considered morally right or emotionally appropriate. Some of the characters have been depicted as exiled from the state of being at ease with who they are---internally and intuitively, tip-toeing around the beautiful broken glass of life. The story is born out of the author's observations of so may relationships. It also maps a social shift in India. There is the must have humour as well---sweetly comic or darkly satirical. The novel is the culmination of an inner harmony, a balance that flows from within to without to embrace all around---creating a cosmos, a vibration in one's aloneness. It's a graduation to a most fulfilling state of blissful solitude---a search for its resonant qualities.
