Artemis

Many people look at me in wonder when I say that I've written a book, seeing this as a mountain of words that would be a hurdle for any "mere human" to produce. Yet throughout my life, the written word has been my second language, and a sacred place where I feel safe to express my deepest thoughts and feelings. As a tortured teenager coping with peer disapproval, I discovered the wonderful book The Hobbit by Tolkein, and set about deciphering the language of the ancient Runes. With that under my belt, I began to write long discourses on the events in my (then) thirteenth year of life. These discourses were written entirely in rune language, so that my secret thoughts were eternally safe from prying eyes.
This love affair with writing pursued me throughout my education, landing me prestigious third places in poetry and prose in a state-wide literary competition, and also leading me into the realm of children's stories. Like many frustrated authors, I discovered that being a talented writer was only half the hurdle, and that having something published was at least the other half. So with 2 children's stories, one spiritual novel and a book on dream interpretation under my belt (all unpublished), I was fortunate enough in 1993 to collaborate with my friend and colleague Quentin Watts (the "Dream Gal" of Triple J Radio fame) to co-author the simple, effective dream dictionary, Dreams: Signs of Things to Come. This book was published by the ABC, and since its release in 1994 has become an Australian bestseller, with over 17,000 copies sold.
My career as a writer was evolving as rapidly as my "other" career. Inspired by my deep love of animals and nature, I had dedicatedly pursued a Bachelor Degree and Postgraduate studies in Zoology, and then gone on to work for the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service, and subsequently the World Wildlife Fund (in Sydney and then in Indonesia).
It was whilst I was in Indonesia that my love of the esoteric, spiritual and psychic world prompted me to begin offering to the local community my services as a spiritual and psychic advisor, which in turn became my chosen career (see "Background" section under the "PSYCHIC Work" menu item for more details of this.)
Upon my return to Australia in late 1994, I settled in Queensland's beautiful Sunshine Coast region, and responded to a spiritual call to change my name (which was previously Vicki Canisius). A Artemis, the Greek Goddess of nature and the moon, became my adopted name. Still with an unquenchable itch to write more books, in 1998 I travelled to Hawaii to swim with the wild Spinner Dolphins. My experiences with the dolphins were so profound that within a week of returning to Australia I was writing my next book, Earth Song (a book about Spirit, Love and Conscious Aliveness). Nine months later, after the by-now familiar knock-backs from publishers, I created the opportunities (and necessary contacts) to self-publish, and Earth Song was born. Whilst self-publishing had its own inherent challenges, the gift it gave to me was the opportunity to produce a book that was entirely as I wished it to be (because I had the final decisions on all aspects of the design and editing). The letters, phone calls and emails I have received from so many readers since Earth Song's release in 1999 have been an ecstatic and unanimous chorus of encouragement, and have inspired me in my goal to bring Earth Song into the international market, and to continue writing.
Alongside these many adventures, my growing reputation as an author and a psychic have brought me many opportunities to be a guest on various radio programmes throughout Australia (including regular psychic and dream programs on Sydney's 2SM, Newcastle's New FM and Sunshine Coast's Coast FM). This has been a deeply rewarding experience for me, and on many occasions it has been extremely clear that the 60 seconds I spent on air talking to an anonymous listener has changed that person's life.
Many people who have had phone consultations with me or have heard me on radio have commented on my "beautiful" voice, and suggested that I should produce meditation tapes. After a great deal of this feedback, I have embraced CDs as a medium for sharing knowledge and Spirit, and produced the "Self Discovery Series" of CDs (including Discover your Spirit Guides and Discover your Past Lives). These CDs are guided journeys, set against beautiful background rainforest sounds and spiritual music. They incorporate information, techniques and guided visualisation in an enriching experiential journey into the Self.
With such diverse projects, it is natural to ask with a grin, "What will she do next?" My love of writing and "creating" offer me a never-ending stream of amazing ideas. I have another six books in various stages of completion and ideas for many other Self Discovery CDs, and seek only the balance of time and the "rightness" of the moment to bring these into the world.
