An understanding of where Dr Ruth Cilento is coming from will help you appreciate this work. She comes from a very talented and respected Australian family. Her parents were medical pioneers. Her father (Sir Raphael Cilento) was knighted for his work in establishing a health program for the South Pacific in .the 1920's. Her mothar, Lady Cilento, wrote an extremely successful medical column in the Courier Maii for over 50 years. She had a huge following and helped educate many in the beliefs of nutrition and nutritional supplements.
After 22 years in general practice with her husband Westall Smout, Ruth herself studied child psychology and worked for many years in government psychiatric establishments. She moved to the country during 1976-1992 to establish a pioneer ecofriendly Angora goat stud and for 15 years was director of the Psychiatric Outpatient department of a country hospital. During this time she also studied Orthomolecular Nutrition and Complementary Medicine and since has done enormous work with cancer patients. In 1994 Dr Ruth suffered from burnout after many years of overwork. This caused her to develop Chronic Fatigue Syndrome of a type that in many respects mimicked AD because of the effects of the virus on the brain. This changed her life, and although severely debilitated she determined to battle on and use her knowledge and skills together with the support of her colleagues to beat these problems and devise a series of programs that can help all of us with many of the problems of ageing. As she improved, she intensified her research and put the emphasis on the problems of ageing, but what she has written is relevant for all times.
I strongly recommend this book to everyone. I have known Ruth Cilento for a long time and know that it has been written for the right reasons to inform all thinking people.
AGE WITHOUT ALZHEIMERS Dr Ruth Cilento
Review by Derek Duparcq, B.Ac.CPH.
This could be the most important book you will ever read. It is much more than a treatise on Alzheimer's Disease (AD). This collection of three books is a very complete and lucidly written work on the subject of ageing gracefully and happily. It is about healthy longevity for us all.
Just to mention the word Alzheimers may conjure up feelings of intense fear in some of us. If you are in your sixth or seventh decade of life and have ever hod any involvement with loved ones suffering from this disorder, and then you begin tu notice occasional lapses of memory in yourself, you may find yourself asking, "am I getting Alzheimers?" The fear of helplessness and of not being able to care for oneself is one of the most powerful fears we can have. These books answer many of your questions such as:
What actually is Alzheimer's disease and what are the symptoms?
Why do we get it and how is it diagnosed?
Can it be treated or prevented from developing?
What can I do to reduce the risk of developing this disorder?
The books answer these questions, as well as a host of other questions regarding healthy ageing, very clearly and completely and in a very friendly way.
