Steve Meyerowitz was pronounced "Sproutman" in a 1977 feature magazine article that explored the whys and wherefores of his (then) 100% pure sprout diet. While most diets change over the course of twenty-five years, Steve remains the world's most popular spokesperson for the art of sprouting. He became interested in sprouts because of his lifelong condition of chronic allergies and asthma. After twenty years of disappointment with conventional medicine therapy, he took his health in his own hands and made dramatic changes to his diet. After only two months of fasting, yoga, and a diet of sprouts and other "living foods," his symptoms literally disappeared. He continued to practice and explore the benefits of a strict 100% living foods diet (nothing cooked, packaged, canned, frozen, or processed) for many years, and also experimented with fruitarianism (only fruit) and fasting as long 100 days. Steve first shared his innovative kitchen gardening techniques, along with the cuisine and recipes he developed from them, at his "no-cooking" classes in New York City during the 1970s and 1980s. He has been featured on the PBS, Home Shopping Network, QVC, the TV Food Network, and in numerous magazines such as Prevention, Organic Gardening, Vegetarian Times, Better Nutrition, and Flower & Garden. His sprouting inventions and organic sprouting seeds are sold in North America and around the world. Steve and his family live and breathe the fresh air of the Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts.
