The caufeof this decline is the more ferious, and the more difficult to be removed, as it is connected with the general ftate of manners in the kingdom, with the frivolity of the age, and with the difiipa- tion of young perfons who are introduced into fociety much too early. The moft able andbeft mentioned mailers can only drug- gle againft this prevailing caufe, and oppofe it by their affiduity, their application, and their courage. Their fuccefc, notwithftand- ing all their exertions, will be confined to a fmall number of pupilu defirous of profiting by their afiifbnce. Potbier fucceeded a profeflbr who had began to infpire emulation; and he found in thofe who Rill compofe the univerfity, colleagues imprefled with the fame views and the fame zeal as himfelf. The moft celebrated men are not always the ableft matters, and even the depth of their knowledge fcems to render this function the more painful to them; and to be an obftacle to the fuccefs of their nftructions. The labour of compofition has nothing but what is agreeable to a perfon who has purfued the regular ftudy of a fci- ence; who has made himfelf mailer of it as a connected whole; and is familiar with al its parts.
