Andreas Dobler's paintings are based on the everyday and pop culture of the 20th century. In his youth he was strongly influenced by pop music, psychedelia, and surrealist painting, and he continues to mix influences from high and low culture. His work is dominated by rooms without humans - hotel architecture taken from travel catalogues, science-fiction landscapes, streets from computer games, and most recently prison-like buildings, reminiscent of Piranesi. They are spaces to project our society's desires, fears, and visions of the future. Art enters these often boldly painted utopias of everyday life with spots of color (pure painting) or sculptures that reference Henry Moore or Hans Arp. They seem to be stand-ins for human beings as they are the only anthropomorphic shapes in Dobler's paintings. The artist's book Argovian Sun is Andreas Dobler's first comprehensive publication. It is published in conjunction with a one-man show at Kunsthaus Glarus (9/15 to 11/17 2002). In contrast to the exhibition that focuses on Dobler's involvement with painting, the book shows the entire range of his creative work. Besides numerous color reproductions of his works, we see his source material (record covers, images from newspapers and magazines, his own photographs and so on), sketches, studio views, but also lists - lists of paintings to make or "Questions on my paintings I was never asked" - lyrics, or his own comments on his works attributed to fictive characters.
