Bloodstains in Ulster recounts the remarkable true story of one of the most blatant miscarriages of justice in Northern Ireland. After a brutal, fatal attack, Mary McGowan, a middle-class Catholic, named her attacker, "Robert the Painter." The suspect, Robert Taylor, a poor Protestant, was quickly apprehended and sentenced to death only to be released in a few months on a technicality. The evidence suggests that not only was the judicial process deliberately sabotaged but that the appeal judges (members of the Grand Lodge Committee of the Orange Order) turned a blind eye to that fact. The case riveted the attention of 1940s Belfast and was an omen of what would follow. Although it focused on two ordinary individuals, this case is a single episode encapsulating tribal strife in Northern Ireland.
