Champa, which flourished from the second to the nineteenth centuries, is by far the least-known of all the great Indianized civilizations of Southeast Asia. Its own history was violent and ultimately tragic, and, as it covered large areas of what is now central and southern Vietnam, the region has been difficult to access for most of the last sixty years. Cham Art: Treasures from the Da Nang Museum, Vietnam is the first substancial book in English to be published on the art of this remarkable and distinctive civilization. It illustrates and describes some one hundred major sculptures at present housed in the Da Nang Museum, and provides an overview of Cham history, including references to the many influences from neighbouring civilizations: Khmer, Srivijaya, Dvaravati and Chinese. Cham art is unmistakable and individualistic, vigorous and even dramatic in its rendering of movement. Mostly carved in sandstone and in high relief, the sculptures represent the main Hindu and Buddhist deities, real and fabulous animals in combat pose, and flying celestial beings and dancers. Richly illustrated with views of the monuments and the superb countryside in which they were built, this book brings to life a civilization which for many readers will come as a great revelation. AUTHOR: After studying philosophy at the Sobornne, Emmanuel Guillon spent seven years in Southeast Asia teaching French and philosophy. During four years in Burma he studied Mon culture and later obtained his doctorate in Mon history. In the 1980s, he began studying Cham archaeology and carried out fieldwork at many sites in Vietnam, becoming one of the world experts in this subject. In 1994 he founded the Friends of Old Champa Society and established a network of Cham scholars. ILLUSTRATIONS 200 colour photos
