Numerous references to, and quotations from, this book have been made in the preceding pages; but it requires further and more particular consideration; because it has been extensively circulated in the United States, and has been, to a certain extent, adopted as a text-book. This is fortunate, so far as its author isvcorrect in his views. Many of his precepts are of great value; and they, combined with his illustrations and his generally accurate style, will render substantial service in correcting popular errors, and staying, in some degree, the tide of popular corruption. But, on the other hand, whatever his book contains of a doubtful or erroneous character, ought to be carefully exposed, so that its effects may be prevented; for his faults will find both admirers and imitators. Before proceeding in the task of such exposure, the author, or compiler, of this (his own) book deems it proper to say: ? First, That Dean Alford first published his " Queen's English " in the consecutive numbers of an English weekly paper, and that he afterward collected them into a volume; Secondly, That the volume now before the present writer bears a London and New York imprint, is dated 1866, and is designated as one of the " tenth thousand " of copies already published; and, Thirdly, That, although from the Dean's statements, passim, in the " Queen's English," it seems that his book has been very frequently criticised in England, not a word of such criticism, except such as the Dean himself quotes, has ever been seen by the present writer; ? a statement which must relieve him from the charge of having knowingly gone over the same ground as the English critics; and also from that of having borrowed their strictures.
