INTRODUCTION SHAKESPEARIAN STUDY - P R E F A C E - AS I have already published one book on Shakespeare, I am bound to anticipate the objection-Why write another that goes in some measure over the same ground The answer is not far to seek. A book was needed for younger readers who have not power, and for popular readers who have not time, to master critical questions concerning Shakespeare, and who yet are desirous of acquainting themselves, to some extent, with the results of those investigations that have been made. I have been repeatedly asked to publish, in a separate form, the portions of my Jfalzzcal which are independent of any subjective theories. This is not, however, what I have done. This book has nothing in common with the Malzuad but what is common to all general treatises on, or critical editions of, Shakespeare. It is partly an introduction and partly a supplement to the larger work, yet I trust complete in itself. The book differs from the previous one in the following particulars I. It is meant for younger readers, and a more popular, not so critical a public although there are in it things that I trust may be useful even to the latter. 2. It only extends to the end of Shakespeares life, 1616, instead of embracing the whole history of the Elizabethan and Jacobean drama. 3. It omits all such topics as metrical tests, controverted questions, lists of actors, and matters essential to the more advanced student, but a hindrance to the beginner. On the other hand, it contains entirely new matter to the extent of three-fourths or the book, and the rest has been altogether re-written, not condensed from the fiIn zuaZ. I may specially mention, among the new matter, the fullaccounts of the doubtful plays, the lives of contemporary dramatists, the excerpts on grammar founded on Schmidts Lexicon, the account of the alterations to which plays were subject, the chapter, on the presentation of plays, founded on P. Chasles, the tables compiled from the accounts of revels at court ancl Henslows Diary, and the final chapter on the connection or Shakespeares plots. But neither this nor its predecessor are supposed to contain everything which a student requires, although this does, I trust, contain all that is needecl for popular readers or young students, apart from the ordinary annotations on the text and the larger work is meant to embrace all that, in addition to such books as Schmidts Lexicon and Abbotts Grammar, will be needful for some considerable time of study. Wherever there is a discrepancy in dates, etc., between the introdaction and the 1WirtzztaZ, the introdztction may be generally trusted. The differences are due to the stereotyping of the Mafzzcat by the publishers without my knowledge, and the consequent perpetuation of the errata, a list of which was sent them by me in August 1876. I believe that the great care of the printers, and my further experience in correcting for the press, have kept the inirodz ctioa nearly free from printers errors...
