Joel began raising chickens when he was 10 years old and serendipitously fell into the pastured poultry concept a couple of years later when a pair of unused portable rabbit runs became available. A hard core how-to book, this includes all the stories and tips, from brooding to marketing. Centered around meat chickens, it includes a section on layers and turkeys. Many would say this book started the American pastured poultry movement.
Called "the high priest of the pasture" by The New York Times, Joel Salatin likes to refer to himself as a "Christian-libertarian-environmentalist-lunatic farmer." He lives with his family on Polyface Farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia "Salatin has developed a system of pasture rotation that produces nutrient-rich grass and maximizes the composting of animal waste.
Each species on the farm is dependent on another. The cows, for example, eat the nutrient rich grass in Pasture A and then are moved to Pasture B. The chickens then move to Pasture A where they pick through the cow pies eating bugs and grinding the waste into the ground where it revitalizes the grass for the cows.

Joel Salatin and his family own and operate Polyface Farm, arguably the nation's most famous farm since it was profiled in Michael Pollan's "New York Times" bestseller, "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and two subsequent documentaries, Food, Inc., and Fresh. An accomplished author and public speaker, Salatin has authored seven books. Recognition for his ecological and local-based farming advocacy includes an honorary doctorate, the Heinz Award, and many leadership awards.
