‘Simply Classical Chillout’ does exactly what it says on the box with the added guarantee that there will be great tunes in here that you have never heard before. We hear the “standard” classics seemingly all the time these days, but this comprehensive set introduces you to works by great composers that boldly go where most compilations fear to tread.
From the Baroque Period, ‘Simply Classical Chillout’ signs off each of its four constituent albums with each constituent movement of Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’, a reward (if any were needed) for listening to ‘Simply Classical Chillout’ in its entirety.
Alongside Vivaldi’s most famous Baroque Concerti (popularised by Nigel Kennedy but here superbly performed by I Solisti Italiani) come some rarer but delightfully accessible works by other great but unsung Venetians such as Bonporti (Disc 1, Track 6), Geminiani (Disc 3, Track 11) and the great Anglo/German, Handel, whose ‘Music for the Royal Fireworks’ (Disc 1, Track 10 ) is supplemented by ‘The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba’ from his opera Solomon (Disc 2, Track 10). Further Baroque delights are provided by Bach (‘Air on a G String’ from his suite No. 3, Disc 1 Track 9) and Telemann (Disc 4, Track 9).
‘Simply Classical Chillout’ also takes us on a journey through some of the major works of the late 19th / early 20th Century again from composers whose names are familiar but whose many great works are not. Gustav Holst’s ‘Jupiter’ from ‘The Planets’ which opens the album may be as familiar as the ‘Adagietto’ from Mahler’s 5th Symphony (Disc 1, track 4) but how often do we hear the power and majesty of Camille Saint-Saëns’ ‘Organ Symphony’ (Disc 1, Track 8), the suave and tempered orchestrations of Satie’s ‘Trois Gymnopédies’ (orchestrated by Debussy no less, Disc 2, Tracks 1-3), the almost menacing orchestral depths of the great Czech composer, Leos Janacek (Disc 2, Track 11) or the sheer vivid orchestral painting of Jean Sibelius’s ‘Symphony No. 5’ (Disc 2, Track 8)?
This set also includes two famous chamber pieces that have long escaped instant recognition, Borodin’s ‘String Quartet No. 2’ (Disc 3, Track 9) and Dvorak’s Quartet ‘The American. Op. 96’ (Disc 4, Track 10) here in a superb performance by the Carmina Quartet.
Rarities for your aural delectation include the magnificently atmospheric compositions by Japanese composer Rentaro Taki; ‘Moon Over Ruined Castle’ (Disc 1, Track 7) and ‘Blossoms’ (Disc 3, track 7). Following the recent sale of one of Mahler’s missing ‘Lieder’ manuscripts, find enclosed the rare and wonderful performance of his most accessible song ‘Ich Bin Der Welt Abhanden Gekommen’ (Disc 2, Track 9) by Doris Soffel; Mahler as you have never heard him before perhaps, but surely worth the wait. And Debussy’s ‘Deux Arabesques’ (Disc 1, Tracks 2 & 3)? If you have never heard these delightful French piano pieces before, you will be listening to them over and over.
We of course have absolutely no prejudice against great performances of great popular classics on ‘Simply Classical Chillout’ and in that respect point you in the direction of the famous ‘Adagio’ from Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto (Disc 2, Track 5), the perennial favourite of Classic FM’s listeners, here in a magnificent performance by Boris Belkin, also featured in the Sibelius Violin Concerto (Disc 4, Track 7).
‘Simply Classical Chillout’ is also unique in providing the classical listener with a superb roster of top quality recordings from great artists thanks to a unique arrangement with Denon Classics, one of the most credited recording and sound engineering companies in the world.
