Excerpt from The Christian Ministry: A Manual of Church Doctrine Author of the following Manual wishes to state distinctly that no pretentions to originality are here put forth by him. The Manual is a Compilation from various Authors who have written on the subject, and is intended simply as a help to those who have neither the time nor the opportunity for consulting a number of volumes. Its aim is to set before the non-theological reader a succinct ac count, historical and doctrinal, of the points at issue. The question discussed in the following pages is Not, What are the circumstances which may afford ground for hope that a departure from the Fellowship of the Apostles may be forgiven, and men still be made the instruments for glorifying God? But It is, Whether the doctrine of the transmission of the Apostolic Commission by the Chief Pastor formed part of that Faith Which Was Once Delivered To The Saints? And if there be (as he thinks he has shown that there is) every reason from Scripture and Tradition for believing that it did form part of that faith, then, who shall blame him for obeying the Holy Spirits injunction by the mouth of the Apostle, that we "should Earnestly contend for it" (St. Jude, ver. 3). On the first question he would simply repeat the words of Hezekiah(2 Chron. xxx. 18, 19): "The good Lord pardon every one that prepareth his heart to seek God, the Lord God of his fathers, though he be not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary."
