The relation of the Indians to the Europeans in Tucuman was not exceptional. Everywhere under Spanish rule in America the Indian problem was always present and always unsolved. It was magnified and made more difficult by Spain's plan to adopt the Indians as a constituent part of Spanish-American society. The English colonists reduced their relations to the aborigines to their lowest terms by holding them aloof from the new communities. For them the only Indian question was the question of defence. The Spaniards, on the other hand, by forming a social alliance with the Indians, encountered a multitude of difficulties. The social equality of the Spaniards and the Indians was out of the question, and this point having been determined, the way was open to the establishment of any one of a large variety of possible relations.. In spite of the fact that feudalism was never an important feature of society in Spain, some characteristics of European feudalism appeared under the Spaniards in the New World. The Indian lacked the knowledge and the cultivation required for independence in civilised society, and this fact marked him either for disappearance,as under the English regime, or for serfdom or for some other form of servitude under Spanish rule.
