Phil Thornton's past explorations with rhythmic Afro-Mediterranean music led to such favorites as IMMORTAL EGYPT and ETERNAL EGYPT. TRIBALE travels down a similar road, featuring music rich in the exotic percussion and strings of Egypt, North Africa and the Middle East. As the name implies, the album is a celebration of indigenous music styles. Being a Thornton release, those whirling dervishes of frame drums, riq, mizmar, ney flute and lutes is matches with moody ambience and haunting vocalese to create a mystique of mystery and enchantment. At times, Thornton really accelerates the pace of the music, like on the hyperkinetic "Ederlezi Trance," where galloping beats and swirls of percussive instrumentation and electric guitars provide a charged atmosphere for trance dance. Other songs lie on the more sensual side of the spectrum, reflecting the serpentine grace of Egyptian music.
World fusion music with ethnic and electronic instrumentation, plus gorgeous Eastern European vocals.
