From: WHEN DID I GET LIKE THIS?
The Other Mommy
I was giving Connor his five weekly minutes of quality Mommy time by hanging out on the toilet seat while he took his bath.
"Mommy," Connor said attempting to float on his back in our tub that was quickly becoming too small for him to lie down in, "Mommy, do you remember how you told Seamus he had an angel Seamus sitting on one shoulder and a bold Seamus sitting on the other shoulder?"
"Sure I do, bud."
"Did you also know there are two Mommies?"
"Really?" I said, grinning inwardly as I imagined what six-year-old bon mots might issue from his lips next. "Who are they?"
"Well, there?s the nice Mommy, and-," he twisted the washcloth, and paused.
"...and?" I encouraged.
"-and the-other one," he said, conveniently closing his eyes and slipping below the surface of the water.
I suppose I have received other feedback in my life as searingly honest as this, but I cannot recall it.
There are two of me. One of me swings my two sons? hands in mine as we stroll three abreast to the corner to wait for the school bus. We all have the same smile.
Then, there is the other me, the one that storms into her son?s room the following morning, saying, "How many times do I have to tell you to put your G.D. SHOES ON WE ARE GOING TO MISS THE BUS!!" and sees, just for a moment, the fear in her child?s eyes that one of the shoes just might be winged at him.
